Snow Is On The Way For Parts Of Ontario & It Could Create Travel Chaos Into The Weekend
People in Ontario may want to get their shovels ready because parts of the province are about to be hit with a bunch of snow.
The Weather Network says certain areas in Ontario could see up to 15 centimetres and all that snow could pose for some "tricky travel" this week.
So far this year's winter in Ontario has seen "below normal snowfall" and the start of February even saw record-warm temperatures.
TWN says the weather in December and January was above seasonal due to El Niño and the last time Toronto saw any snow on the ground was back on January 25.
That will change this week with cooler temperatures already settled in across the province and now snow is on the way.
The network says "between 5-10 cm is expected for much of southern Ontario through Thursday, with 10-15 cm possible for parts of cottage country north of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)."
TWN says the snow will start along Lake Huron and Lake Superior shorelines Thursday morning and the snowfall will reach the GTA in time for the evening commute home. Snow will likely hit the Ottawa area in the evening as well.
The snowfall should end for the GTA and Ottawa overnight and into Friday morning.
Aside from the snow and cold temperatures, strong winds of between 50-70 kilometres per hour are expected in the area of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay which could cause some "whiteouts for the snow belt regions," according to TWN.
While the heaviest snowfall is expected on Thursday, the forecast does show flurries will fall in Toronto from Friday into the weekend.
Elsewhere in Canada, a winter storm is on the way for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, with up to 50 centimetres of snow expected in some areas.
Anyone travelling to the U.S. Northeast from Toronto Pearson International Airport is asked to check their flights ahead of time as several flights were cancelled on Tuesday due to a winter storm.
