VIA Rail passengers ran into all kinds of trouble on Wednesday as they tried to travel between Montreal and Toronto during what quickly turned into an ice storm.

The result left many people stranded on VIA Rail trains for hours, while other trips were massively delayed or cancelled altogether because of freezing rain that led to widespread power outages and downed trees across a large area of eastern Ontario.

Ontario drivers bold enough to get on the roads during the beginning of a major, multi-day snowstorm may have found themselves very quickly regretting their decision to try and tough things out.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said as of early Friday afternoon, there had responded to multiple collisions involving "up to 100 vehicles," and in some areas, the worst of this storm hasn't even arrived yet.

So many Ontarians were left in the dark this past week. According to Hydro One, over 200,000 hydro users had no power following Wednesday's severe storm, which saw winds soaring to 106 km/h in some spots. The Northern Tornadoes Project was even looking into possible tornadoes near Oshawa and Carleton Place.

"Thunderstorms and high winds are resulting in power outages in parts of central and eastern ON," Hydro One tweeted following the storm. "Our crews are responding as quickly and safely as possible."

Towards the end of May — hundreds of thousands of households in Ottawa went without power for several days. But judging by Rogers Communications and other companies' billing practices, the May derecho storm may as well not have happened.

You might want to prepare for another stormy weekend because Ottawa could get hit with some severe thunderstorms, and Hydro Ottawa said they might put a pause on power repairs in the city.

On Friday, May 27, The Weather Network said to be on alert for severe thunderstorms across Ontario and Quebec. It also warned the public of winds that could reach up to 80 km/h with a chance of 30 millimetres of rain and small hail.
