It's hard to believe, but Toronto's summer is almost over, as Labour Day weekend is upon us.
Time moves swiftly in a fast-paced city like the 6ix, but this year, it felt like the season went by in a flash.
Labour Day is the unofficial end of the summer, as we dip our toes into fall weather over the coming weeks.
However, it gives us a chance to celebrate the workers who keep Toronto running.
Unlike the Civic Holiday, Labour Day is a statutory holiday in Ontario, which means banks, several government offices, some grocery stores, and many shopping centres will be closed.
This year, Labour Day falls on Monday, September 1.
If you're wondering what's open and what's closed in the city on the day, don't sweat it; we've compiled a complete guide of everything you need to know. We've also included a list of things to do in Toronto on the long weekend.
Grocery stores
- Aisle 24: All locations of this cashierless grocery chain are open 24/7, all year round. You'll need to download the app and create a profile to unlock the door.
- Costco: All warehouses are closed.
- Farm Boy: All stores in the GTA are closed, except for:
- Farm Boy Aurora: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Farm Boy Newmarket: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Farm Boy Yonge and Silvermaple: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Farm Boy Bronte: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Farm Boy Port Credit: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- FreshCo: Stores typically open with varied hours. Check FreshCo's website to see the opening hours for your nearest store.
- Loblaws: Most stores will be closed. However, some locations, such as the Carlton Street store (7 a.m. to 10 p.m.), will be open with modified hours. Visit Loblaws' store locator to check your local store.
- Longo's: Most Longo's locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, locations at First Canadian Place and Brookfield Place will be closed. For more information, visit Longo's Store Finder.
- Metro: Most locations will be closed. However, the Metro College Park (444 Yonge St.) will open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information on your nearest store's opening hours, visit Metro's website.
- No Frills: Most stores will be closed. However, some stores will open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. You should check No Frills' store locator to see the hours of operation for your local store.
- Rabba Fine Foods: Every store is open 24/7, 365 days of the year.
- Real Canadian Superstore: All stores will be closed.
- Sobeys: Most stores will open. To view the hours of your local shop, you can visit Sobeys' Store Locator.
- T&T Supermarket: Select locations in the GTA are open. Check T&T's website for more information.
- Walmart: Most locations will be closed. However, the stores at the Square One in Mississauga (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Vaughan (W) (7 a.m. to 11 p.m.) are open.
- Whole Foods: The Yorkville and Square One Mississauga stores will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The locations in Oakville and Unionville will be closed.

- Square One Shopping Centre: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Bramalea City Centre: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Vaughan Mills: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- CF Markville Shopping Centre: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Promenade Shopping Centre: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
CLOSED
Services
- Banks: All banks are closed.
- Canada Post: Closed on national, provincial, and territorial holidays, with no mail collection or delivery. However, privately operated post offices will follow the opening hours of the businesses that host them.
- City of Toronto: Most City of Toronto services will be closed.
- Garbage collection and recycling: There'll be no service impact on daytime curbside residential collections, as well as nighttime curbside residential, commercial, and premium organics collections. There'll be no multi-residential front-end collections on Monday, but they will be collected on Tuesday. Drop-off depots and transfer stations will be closed.
- GO Transit: Will operate a Saturday schedule.
- Service Canada: Closed, but you can still access their website.
- ServiceOntario: Closed, but you can still access online services.
- Toronto Public Library: Closed on Sunday and Monday.
- TTC: Will operate a Sunday service, starting at approximately 6 a.m.
Things to do
- Aga Khan Museum: From 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Arcadia Earth: Open Saturday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Monday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be free sustainable crafts available each day, along with free cotton candy with admission, all weekend long.
- Art Gallery of Ontario: From 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Bata Shoe Museum: From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Canada's Wonderland: From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Splash Works is open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will also be a fireworks show on Sunday night.
- Casa Loma: From 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last guest admission is at 4:30 p.m.
- Conservatories: The Allan Gardens Conservatory and Centennial Park Conservatory are free to visit from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily over the whole weekend.
- Centreville Amusement Park: From 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- CN Tower: From 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Last entry is at 9:30 p.m.
- The Distillery Historic District: From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Fort York National Historic Site: From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Golf: All five of the City of Toronto's golf courses will be open.
- High Park Animal Display: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Hockey Hall of Fame: From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- The Pickleplex Social Club: The Promenade Shopping Centre in Thornhill's all-new indoor pickleball experience (six courts) is now open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Ripley's Aquarium of Canada: From 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Riverdale Farm: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Royal Ontario Museum (ROM): From 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Toronto Zoo: From 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
