Justin Trudeau was just ranked the worst Canadian prime minister in over 50 years
It looks like Justin Trudeau isn't winning any popularity contests lately.
According to a new survey from Research Co., nearly two in five Canadians (38%) believe that the current prime minister is the worst leader the country has had since 1968. This marks an increase of eight percentage points from last year's poll, and it officially makes Trudeau the least liked of the nine prime ministers who've held office during that time.
It wasn't even close, either — Trudeau's unpopularity rating is more than double that of the runner-up, Stephen Harper, who sits at a distant 14%.
The survey also revealed some interesting regional divides. Just over half of all respondents in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan named Justin Trudeau as their least favourite prime minister. Meanwhile, these numbers are significantly lower in Ontario (37%) and his home province of Quebec (28%).
Respondents were also asked which of the nine PMs was the best, and while Trudeau's popularity seems to be sinking there as well, former prime ministers like Brian Mulroney are making gains. Mulroney, who served as Canada's 18th PM and died at the age of 84 in February, has seen his positive ratings increase by seven points since last year's poll, with 15% of Canadians now calling him the best prime minister since 1968.
Even so, Pierre Trudeau and Stephen Harper still top the list of favourites, with 18% and 16% of the vote, respectively.
When it comes to the battle of the Trudeaus, it's a mixed bag. While Pierre Trudeau's popularity has slightly dipped since last year, he remains much more well-regarded than his son. The older Trudeau snagged the top spot in the ranking of Canada's best PMs at 18%, while Justin got just 10% of that vote.
