Calgary's News Art Installation Patio Space Opens Tomorrow & It's So Montreal It Hurts

Calling all YYC art enthusiasts.
Contributor

Calgary's art scene is bringing something extra special this summer. On Wednesday, July 15, a socially-distanced art installation will be taking over near a Calgary shopping centre. Deerfoot City's Block Party has such bold Montreal feels that you won't need to vacation in Quebec anytime soon.

The Block Party will be taking place at Destination Deerfoot City. The installation is basically a massive boulevard-turned-patio that's going to be decked out in vivid colours throughout the summer.

Locals will be able to hang around at this space while socially- distanced and check out all the cool designs on the ground.

The centre's announcement regarding the Block Party explained what the whole space is going to look like.

They describe the Block Party as an "an art installation and patio space created by four local artists including a 200ft roadway mural, outdoor lawn games and interactive art seating."

Photos posted by the shopping centre on Instagram depict the artists painting over the pavement in vibrant, eye-catching colours and shapes.

It's a good reminder that Calgary indeed has a thriving art scene of its own and that you can't be missing out.

The announcement said that the installation will have over 200 feet of a pathway and walking space.

Guests can move through this pathway and feast their eyes on these intriguing forms of public art

Nearby, you'll be able to find picnic tables, umbrellas, and benches that will come adorned in their own exquisite and colours and designs.

These structures meet the criteria set by Alberta Health Services in terms of "spacing and cleaning protocols," the release reads.

When you feel like you need a break from appreciating all that lovely art around you, you can grab a meal from Deerfoot City's Food Lodge.

Entertainment such as recreational lawn games, The Rec Room, and iFly will also be available to the guests.

The four local artists that have been working on the installation's artwork are Rhys Farrell, Sydonne Warren, Nasarimba, and Leechuts.

The installation will have its grand opening on July 15 and will be up until September 26, 2020.

That gives you more than enough time to make the trip and take part in YYC's distinctive art scene.

Outdoor spaces, funky art pieces, and a good old day out at the mall are what Calgary summers are all about.
