Amid calls to scrap travel rules, the federal government says it is "actively reviewing" Canada's border measures and changes could be announced soon.

The country's top doctor has revealed that Canada's travel restrictions need to be "reevaluated in the days and weeks to come" as the government plans for when the Omicron wave recedes.

Dr. Theresa Tam was asked during a COVID-19 briefing on February 4 to give an update about when the federal government could be expected to ease some of its travel measures.

With the recent discovery of the new Omicron variant, Canada's top doctor has revealed that it hasn't been detected in this country but it could happen even with new travel restrictions in place.

During a COVID-19 update on November 26, Dr. Theresa Tam said that provincial laboratories have searched for the variant but haven't found any detection to date, which means "there are no indications of the variant's presence in Canada."

On June 21, the federal government announced updates to Canada's travel rules for fully vaccinated travellers who are permitted to enter the country.

Starting on July 5, eligible travellers will be able to skip the two-week quarantine period, as well as the mandatory hotel stay and the day-eight, post-arrival COVID-19 test.

On Friday, June 18, Justin Trudeau explained what Canada's proof of vaccination system will look like in regards to international travel.

Speaking at a press conference, the prime minister said that "in the initial phase we're going to be working with the ArriveCAN app in ways that people can upload an image of their paper proof of vaccination or online proof of vaccination so that the border agents, on their return to Canada, can verify indeed that they are fully vaccinated."
