I'm a born-and-raised Vancouverite, and I’ve also worked in Toronto and Montreal — so before anyone accuses me of hating Canada, relax.

I've earned the right to say this. And while Canada will always be home, after nearly a decade living in the U.S. there are a few very Canadian things I absolutely do not miss. I'm talking about the painfully early closing times, the passive-aggressive culture, the bleak dating scene, and Vancouver's spiritual commitment to athleisure.

Moving to the US made me realize just how many top-tier Canadian snacks Americans are missing out on. From Coffee Crisp and Hickory Sticks to ketchup chips and Nanaimo bars, there are many Canadian snacks I still crave — and still can't easily find — now that I live in the States.

This is bringing me way back to my elementry schools days, when snack envy was at its peak.

When I moved from Vancouver, it went without saying that certain things would be missed. The cheap, Ocean Wise-approved sushi? My local grocer sells a 6-piece tuna maki roll for $15.50, so. Yeah. Duh. Definitely missed.

Health care? As someone with a dangerously high heart rate who hasn't touched a cardio machine since I was court-mandated to in Grade 10 P.E. — a given, naturally.

In true Canadian fashion, I've spent most of my adult life being painfully self-deprecating. After a decade of bouncing between Vancouver and L.A. though, I've learned a few things. Canada beat the humility into me, and the U.S.A beat it right back out.

I've always been the first to crack a joke at my own expense — and that included my nationality. Whenever someone asked me where I was from (at least once a day), I'd say "Canada". They'd laugh, congratulate me on our health care, and I'd throw it right back, congratulating them on having everything else.

Well, Canada, it's official: We've been knocked down a peg on the world stage after a new ranking just declared the United States a better country than Canada.

That's right — for the first time in the history of the U.S. News Best Countries in the World ranking, our neighbours to the south have officially outranked us. Ouch.
