After spending a month in Charlottetown in the summer of 2016, I moved to Prince Edward Island the following year. I was looking for a change from Ontario — and, honestly, I definitely got one.

At first, the slower pace and change of scenery felt refreshing. But after a few years, the smallness and slowness of island life started to wear on me, among other things.

I moved to Prince Edward Island from the GTA in 2017. I had been completely enchanted by it after spending time there the previous summer, but moving there wasn't as seamless as I thought it would be.

There were things I hadn't considered about life on P.E.I. I thought life would be simpler — but in some ways, it actually became more complicated. It turns out, the island life wasn't for me.

Leaving the bustling streets of Toronto and moving to small-town P.E.I. sounds like a rom-com come to life — but the reality (as it so often is) isn't quite as picture-perfect.

In the summer of 2016, I went on a self-prescribed writing retreat in Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island. My days were spent sightseeing — wandering along red-sand beaches, stopping at lighthouses, taking the long way home just to see what was around the bend — and my evenings often ended with oysters downed like shots.
