More than a year has passed since Ontario rolled out its new automatic licence plate renewal system — and while the change has been a significant relief for most Ontario drivers, there are still a few catches worth keeping in mind.

As we reported back in June, the automatic renewal program officially launched in July 2024 and applies to the majority of everyday vehicles on Ontario roads. That means most passenger cars, motorcycles, mopeds, and smaller trucks under 3,000 kg now get renewed in the background without drivers needing to lift a finger.
