It feels like everyone is abroad right now (scrolling on Instagram is especially tough this time of year), and while nothing can exactly replace a Europe trip – and the food that comes along with it — this small city in B.C. is like a little slice of it.
It's got cute boutiques, picturesque views, stunning beaches nearby, and even cobblestone streets that have a distinctly "across-the-pond" feel to them.
Recently this spot was shouted out in a Narcity Facebook poll as "a beautiful European-inspired city," that readers think is "better than a trip to the U.S." – so if you're looking for summer vacation ideas in B.C., this is the spot to go.
Victoria is the main city on Vancouver Island, a BC Ferries ride away from Vancouver that manages to feel like it's a world away. It's known as the "most British" city in Canada, and has bits of that influence all around. From the charming streets to the castles nearby — this place has a lot that makes it unique.

The first thing you'll likely notice here is the idyllic Inner Harbour. Framed by the stately landmarks of the Fairmont Empress Hotel and the Parliament Buildings, a waterfront stroll here is as scenic as it gets.
Beyond that are streets bursting with local businesses. You've got award-winning restaurants, cute cafes, and boutiques lining the streets. While it's a city, the streets still have a quaint feel to them with historic buildings and colourful storefronts. Lower Johnson Street is especially vibrant with lots of stores and bursts of colour. It's a dreamy city to just wander around, looking down the alleyways, taking in the water views and checking out the sights.
Nearby are also beautiful beaches, making you feel like you've escaped the city just by visiting a different neighbourhood.
One of the most popular things to do in Victoria is a visit to The Butchart Gardens. It's actually a little outside of town, but worth the drive. The gardens span 55 acres and are bursting with colour and beauty. It feels like stepping into a fairytale with thousands of blooms surrounding you.
You can keep the storybook-like vibes of a trip going here by visiting the local castles. Hatley Castle is in Colwood, about 20 minutes from the city, and is picture-perfect.
Right in Victoria though you can see Craigdarroch Castle, which is also beautiful to wander around, and you can take a tour inside.
Looking further beyond the borders of Victoria you'll find everything from rainforests and white sand beaches to hidden waterfalls and secret swimming holes. Vancouver Island is a trove for adventure and natural beauty, and Victoria is the perfect base for a trip.
If you want a charming city visit with a big dash of awe-inspiring nature — it can't get better than this.
