This stunning island in B.C. with white sand shores, ancient forests and hidden wonders draws people in from all around the country, and the world. In the summertime it becomes even more beautiful, as the rain dissipates and the foggy coast turns into a dreamy paradise.

Recently, readers on the Narcity Canada Facebook page shared where they're travelling to this year, instead of going to the U.S. With many cancelling their U.S. vacations, Canadian destinations are getting some extra attention.

Vancouver Island is one that came up a few times, and one look at the picturesque place will have you booking a trip.

Here's a little taste of what you can expect on a visit to Vancouver Island — and trust us, this is better than what you probably had planned.

The sandy shores and lush rainforest of Tofino

Tofino is one of the most popular destinations on the island, and in the province as a whole, for that matter. The little town is set along the western coast of Vancouver Island, and is surrounded by nature so beautiful that it draws in visitors from around the world.

The coast here is all rugged shoreline broken up by white sand beaches, melting into bright blue water and flanked by thick rainforest. It's a unique blend of beach-town vibes with untamed wilderness all around.

Surfing is popular here, and on a beach day you'll likely see people on boards dotting the waves. Throughout the town you'll find a few different shops where you can rent surfboards from or get a lesson if you want to brave the water.

You can also opt for renting a bike and winding your way through the scenery on the long paved path, that takes you from town to the beaches.

Then, there are hikes through vibrant green forests, tours that can take you to natural hot springs, and even whale watching.

There's also just enjoying lazy days on the beach too, and roaming through town.

All in all, nothing says a summer vacation like Tofino.

Visit Canada's best beach

If you want to go somewhere equally beautiful, but where crowds thin out, then you can explore the remote shore in Cape Scott Provincial Park. You'll walk through a lush forest here, past ancient trees, to reach this dreamy beach — San Josef Bay.

It's picture-perfect in every way possible — crystal-clear waters, soft sand, and even sea stacks scattered around the pristine shore. It all works to make this place unforgettable, and it's gotten some attention, ranked as the best beach in Canada.

The charm of Victoria

While nature is the big draw to the island, the bustling city of Victoria has its charm. Sitting along the water this city has an ocean breeze and views that make it the perfect summer getaway for urban-lovers.

Even as a pretty big city it still maintains a sense of charm, with heritage buildings and a quaint vibe. The Inner Harbour is the most picturesque part of town — with the Iconic Fairmont Empress as the landmark and boats bobbing out on the water.

There's great shopping at the local boutiques and incredible food at award-winning restaurants here.

If you want a more luxurious getaway, you can also stay at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, which is tucked away in a beautiful neighbourhood. This spot has mineral pools you can soak in right on the water – so perfect if you go in the spring when it's still a bit chilly but you want to enjoy the outdoors.

You can also level up the charm here with a visit to Hatley Castle, which is right outside of the city. It's a magical spot with sprawling gardens and a setting that looks like it was plucked from the pages of a storybook.

Natural wonders all around

While there is unbelievable nature tucked away in basically every corner of this island, much of it is close to the city.

The Sooke Potholes are incredible rock formations in a river, filled with emerald-green water. You can swim along the river, taking in the serene nature all around the the rock pools. They're just 45 minutes outside of Victoria, so perfect for an afternoon getaway into nature.

Then you have Mystic Beach, an unbelievable hike through a forest that takes you to a unique waterfall cascading down into the ocean. This spot is just over an hour away from the city, and another taste of the unreal nature that's never far.

Day trips to the Gulf Islands

Another perk of a visit to Vancouver Island? You're close enough to the Gulf islands for a quick day trip. These little islands each offer their own unique intrigue, but are all beautiful.

BC Ferries runs from Swartz Bay (right outside of Victoria) and can take you right to these tiny islands. The ferry ride to Salt Spring Island is just 30 minutes, and it's the biggest of the Gulf Islands. With lavender fields, farmstands, and a charming town, it's a go-to destination.

This is just a bit of what Vancouver Island offers, but it's easy to see why people are heading there this year. It's safe to say that you won't be disappointed.
