Hey drivers, here's some good news for your wallets—experts are predicting that Ontario gas prices will drop ahead of the weekend, with even bigger savings on the way!
What's Happening?
According to Gas Wizard, starting Friday, August 30, 2024, gas prices in Ontario will see a slight dip, with the cost of regular gas dropping by 2 cents per litre.
If you're in Toronto, Windsor, or Ottawa, you can expect to pay around 153.9 cents per litre for regular gas, 183.9 cents for premium, and 149.9 cents for diesel.
Here how the predictions look by city:
- Toronto: Regular gas drops to 153.9 cents per litre
- Ottawa: Regular gas goes down to 152.9 cents per litre
- Windsor: Regular gas will be priced at 153.9 cents per litre
- Sudbury: Enjoy regular gas at 148.9 cents per litre—one of the lowest in the province
- Cornwall: Cornwall drivers, you're the exception here, with prices staying flat at 151.9 cents per litre
Expert insights
We reached out to gas analyst Dan McTeague to get the scoop on what these changes mean for Ontario drivers. According to McTeague, while the immediate drop is a small win, the real savings are just around the corner.
"The big news is that in two weeks, we'll switch back to winter blend gasoline, which should see pump prices for gasoline drop by 5-7 cents per litre," says McTeague. However, he also warns that diesel prices will likely rise by a similar amount.
McTeague also pointed out that energy markets are currently dealing with uncertainty, especially with concerns over declining demand in China. So while prices are low now, keep an eye out for potential fluctuations.
National context
According to the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), the national average for gas prices today is 156.2 cents per litre. This is down from 2024's high of 172.4 cents per litre back in April, but still above the lowest point of 135.8 cents per litre in January.
What's next?
While tomorrow’s drop is a small relief, keep your eyes peeled for the bigger dip coming with the winter blend switch. For now, enjoy the lower prices, and maybe plan that road trip you've been thinking about!
Remember: Prices can vary slightly by location, so always check your local gas station's prices before filling up.
