Ontario's SIU Confirms OPP Shot & Killed A Man In Cottage Country On Wednesday

The man had allegedly assaulted people after a dispute over a mask.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has released more information in regards to a fatal shooting near Haliburton involving police that happened on Wednesday, July 15.

According to the SIU, at about 9:25 a.m., the OPP was called for reports of a 73-year-old man assaulting people at a Valu-mart grocery store on Highway 35 in Minden, Ontario, before leaving in his car. 

He refused to wear a mask [...]. He was refused service and the assault happened thereafter.

OPP Sgt. Jason Folz says the assault came after a dispute over wearing a mask in the store, per CP24. The officers then traced the man to an address of Indian Point Road, where they had "an interaction" with him outside the home.

The SIU says two officers fired their weapons and struck the man, and he was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead just before 12 p.m.

Six SIU investigators in total are looking into the incident. The unit is asking anyone with information to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
