These Canadian Celebrities Have Gone Through Break-Ups In 2023 & Some Were A Total Shock
It can be fun seeing a Hollywood love story unfold, but when a celebrity relationship ends it can get messy due to all the publicity.
Unfortunately, 2023 has seen several big-name celebrities call it quits with their partners, and several of those involved Canadian stars.
From reality stars to actors and musicians, here are nine Canadian celebrities who have gone through a breakup in 2023.
Kaitlyn Bristowe and Jason Tartick
Former Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe surprised fans when she announced her break-up from fiancé Jason Tartick in August.
Both Bristowe and Tartick are alums of The Bachelor franchise, although they didn't meet on the show.
They met in 2018 when Bristowe was recording her podcast in Seattle, as per a report by Today.
The couple started dating in 2019 when Tartick publicly asked Bristowe out during an episode of her podcast Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe, according to People.
The pair got engaged in 2021 and sounded very much in love as they discussed the wedding and having kids.
It came as a shock to many when the couple announced the end of their four-year relationship with a joint Instagram post on August 6.
"It’s heartbreaking and sad to say goodbye, but our care and admiration for one another will never die," the post reads.
The duo both attended former Bachelor host Chris Harrison's wedding in November so it looks like they're still on good terms!
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello
Many fans were excited when Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello gave their relationship a second chance in 2023.
The couple first started dating in 2019 and announced they were breaking up after two years in November 2021.
The duo then sparked romance rumours once again after they were spotted kissing at Coachella in April 2023.
Their second chance was short-lived and in June a source told Entertainment Tonight that Mendes and Cabello were over yet again.
"They gave things a try, but ultimately the timing isn't right for either of them. They're both staying busy and doing their own things," the source told ET.
Maybe third times a charm?
Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun
Avril Lavigne and American singer Mod Sun began dating in early 2021 after meeting during a studio writing session, as per a report by People.
The two got engaged in Paris in March 2022 during a romantic boat ride in the Seine River.
According to People, the couple split less than a year later in February 2023 after being on and off for a couple of months.
Avril Lavigne and Tyga
Lavigne's break-up with Mod Sun wasn't the only one for the "Complicated" singer in 2023.
Shortly after her engagement to Mod Sun ended, Lavigne was spotted having dinner with rapper Tyga.
Fans of the couple were excited when Tyga included some pics of him and Lavigne together in an Instagram post on March 7 and the "Sk8er Boi" singer commented with a few black heart emojis.
The couple was together for just under four months before calling it off, as per People.
Although they were briefly spotted together again after the split at a Fourth of July party, the entertainment outlet reported in October that the couple was over for good.
Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith
Canadian actor Joshua Jackson is currently in the midst of a break-up after his wife Jodie Turner-Smith filed for divorce on October 2, according to Elle.
It seems like the divorce was one-sided as the outlet reports that the Dawson's Creek actor was "caught off guard" by the move and he didn't realize Turner-Smith was so "unhappy."
The couple has been married since August 19, 2019 and welcomed daughter June Rose Diana Jackson in April 2020.
Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau
One of the biggest Canadian celebrity break-ups happened on August 2 when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau announced they were splitting up after 18 years of marriage.
"Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate," the pair wrote in a joint Instagram post.
Speculation about trouble between the couple had been circulating for a while before then, especially after Sophie wrote of their "heavy storms" in 2022.
The couple had been married since May 28, 2005 and have three kids together: Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien.
Antoni Porowski and Kevin Harrington
Queer Eye's Antoni Porowski and his partner Kevin Harrington ended their year-long engagement in November.
The couple had been together for three years before getting engaged.
According to People, Porowski and Harrington broke up after realizing they were on "different paths" when discussing the future and their split was amicable.
Eric McCormack and Janet Holden
After 26 years of marriage, Eric McCormack's wife Janet Holden filed for divorce from the Will & Grace actor on November 22.
It's unclear what happened between the couple, and Page Six reports Holden cited "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce filing.
The couple tied the knot in 1997 after meeting on the set of the TV mini-series Lonesome Dove in 1994.
They are parents to a 21-year-old son named Finnigan.
Victor Webster and Shantel VanSanten
Canadian actor Victor Webster filed for divorce from his wife of nearly two years Shantel VanSanten in early January, according to a report by People.
The couple had dated for four years after meeting on the set of the Hallmark movie Love Blossoms in 2017.
Webster proposed to the One Tree Hill actress in February 2020 and they had three weddings in 2021.
Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling
Canadian actor Dean McDermott and his wife Beverly Hills, 90210 actress Tori Spelling announced their separation in June 2023 after 18 years of marriage.
According to People, the couple first met in 2005 while they were filming a movie together in Ottawa. They were both married to other people at the time.
The couple got married in Fiji in 2006 and welcomed four children before McDermott admitted he had cheated on his wife.
The pair worked on their relationship and welcomed a fifth child, a son in 2017.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, McDermott revealed his issues with substance abuse affected his marriage to the actress. He told the outlet he and his wife were living like "roommates" years before the split.
