When it comes to Canadian cities, it's Toronto or Vancouver (and sometimes Calgary) that get shoutouts. I like to think I cracked the code, though, finding the most underrated — yet best — city in the country to call home in my 20s.

So if you want to ditch the crowds at the big Canadian hubs but still have fun in your 20s – listen up.

There are two types of people: those who think they'll stay in a city forever, and those who believe the grass is always greener. Both are valid. Both are, at times, a little delusional.

Canadian cities, in particular, have a way of testing you. They lure you in with promises of lifestyle, opportunity, or (most suspiciously) the chance to own "land" (to which we must always ask — at what cost?). But, like anything, the shine wears off. The quirks reveal themselves. Some you can live with. Some… not so much.

Everyone I know is moving to Calgary. Or, at least five people I know have — which in your 30s counts as a migration wave.

I see the appeal, don't get me wrong. Calgary has some tax advantages, a decent cost of living, and the commutes are shorter, but do those things even matter anymore? I'd save $6 on my vape and 30 minutes in traffic on a random Tuesday, sure. But at what cost?

I'll admit — like many East Coasters, I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder when it comes to this corner of the country

How can we not, though? When people think of Canada, they think Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver — even Calgary — but Halifax is left tucked away, unmentioned and overlooked. Most Canadians have never made their way here, and the rest of the world tends to think that nothing exists east of Toronto.
