Whether you like the sound of sipping fresh coconut water on a beach in Ghana, trekking through Mongolia's vast landscapes, or wandering through historic cobblestone streets in Armenia, you could do it all on a budget of $40 per day or less.
Keep in mind that initial outbound flights aren't factored into these daily budgets, and airfare costs can fluctuate. However, the low cost of accommodation, food, and transport makes these destinations perfect for extended trips or remote work. Just don't forget to check visa requirements beforehand!
If you're looking for a budget-friendly vacation from Canada, here are seven of the most affordable countries to visit in 2025 without breaking the bank.
Laos
Daily budget required: $22
Why you need to go: If you're dreaming of a peaceful escape with jaw-dropping landscapes, Laos is the perfect pick. This Southeast Asian gem is known for its misty mountains, ancient Buddhist temples, and the winding Mekong River, but is less packed with tourists than some of its neighbours.
You can kayak through stunning limestone caves, explore hidden waterfalls, and even try the famous slow boat journey to Luang Prabang. Plus, tasty street food costs just a few dollars.
Kazakhstan
Daily budget required: $27
Why you need to go: If Kazakhstan isn't already on your bucket list, now's the time to add it! With vast golden steppes, snow-capped mountains, and futuristic cities, this country promises a whole lot of variety — but on a budget.
The capital, Astana, looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, while Almaty is surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery.
Public transport is considered super cheap, and you can feast on hearty local dishes for just a few bucks.
Rwanda
Daily budget required: $30
Why you need to go: Known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," Rwanda is a dream destination for nature lovers. While iconic activities like gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park might be pricey, you can still explore stunning lakes, vibrant markets, and rolling green landscapes without breaking the bank.
The capital, Kigali, is one of Africa's safest and most tourist-friendly cities, and getting around is both affordable and easy.
Ghana
Daily budget required: $31
Why you need to go: It's no surprise that Ghana is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa, with vibrant cities, beautiful beaches, and delicious (and affordable!) cuisine.
Whether you're exploring the lively streets of Accra, visiting the historic Cape Coast castles, or relaxing on the palm-lined shores of Busua Beach, you can do it all on a backpacker's budget.
Mongolia
Why you need to go: This rugged, remote destination is perfect for adventure seekers who want to experience the nomadic way of life.
From horseback riding across the vast steppes, exploring the Gobi Desert, and hiking in the Altai Mountains, you can have the adventure of a lifetime — but on a budget — in Mongolia.
Armenia
Daily budget required: $37
Why you need to go: Among those in the know, Armenia is considered one of Europe's best-kept secrets, with stunning mountain landscapes, ancient monasteries, and a fascinating history.
The capital, Yerevan, is full of lively cafes and delicious (but cheap) eats, while the surrounding countryside offers jaw-dropping views and hiking trails. You can visit centuries-old churches, sip on locally made wine, and soak in hot springs without splurging at all.
Georgia
Daily budget required: $39
Why you need to go: If you love history, stunning landscapes, and good wine, Georgia is a must-visit. Nestled between Europe and Asia, this underrated gem has charming cobblestone streets, breathtaking mountain scenery, and some of the most affordable (and delicious) food in the region.
You can also explore the ancient cave city of Uplistsikhe, soak in the sulphur baths of Tbilisi, or hike through the dramatic peaks of the Caucasus, all while staying comfortably within your budget.
It's worth noting that Burkina Faso was also included among HelloSafe's most affordable countries list, with an average daily budget of just $37.70. However, right now, the Government of Canada is urging Canadians to avoid all travel to the country due to the threat of terrorism, the risk of kidnapping and the political instability.
If you're looking for even more affordable travel spots that don't come with a high-level risk warning, a few other destinations that made the list include Mali ($41 per day), Moldova ($51 per day), Cuba ($50 per day) and Sri Lanka ($52 per day).
On the flip side, if you're planning a big-budget getaway, you'll need to set aside a lot more cash for certain destinations. The most expensive places to visit in 2025 include Barbados ($471 per day), Antigua and Barbuda ($443 per day), and Saint Kitts and Nevis ($388 per day).
The Maldives ($382 per day), Switzerland ($357 per day), and the United States ($354 per day) also rank among the world's priciest destinations for tourists right now. Ouch!
