A WestJet flight on its way to London from Calgary was forced to turn around to remove an "unruly passenger" that allegedly assaulted a crew member in a row over mask rules.

In a statement to Narcity, Calgary Police said that members of its Airport Patrol Team were called to remove the passenger from the flight heading to London Gatwick from Calgary International Airport on Wednesday, August 10.

It's probably fair to say that the mask rules for travelling between Canada and the U.S. are a little bit complex right now.

A recent court ruling in the United States has made it so that face covers are no longer required in many settings in the country, including airplanes and airports.

But, if you're travelling from or to Canada, which still does have a mask mandates for air travel, what should you do?


Simply, the American ruling doesn't apply to flights into or from Canada, even if the airline is U.S. based.

In a statement to Narcity, the office of the minister of transport said that "[the Canadian] mask requirements apply to all carriers, whether they are domestic or international and for the duration of the flight, whether it is fully within Canada or not. "

Even though masks aren't required at most indoor spots in the province, there's a chance that they could come back and Ontario's top doctor is urging residents to "be prepared" for their return.

The Ontario government may have lifted the mask mandates across the province, but that doesn't mean every city in Ontario is ready to go mask-free.

In a tweet posted on Monday at 11:41 a.m., the city of Mississauga reminded its residents that masks will still be required in indoor public spaces even though the majority of Ontario is no longer required to mask up.
