I just moved to Calgary from Ottawa a year ago, and am ready to admit — I had my misconceptions about this city. Alberta is like some far-away land to Ontarians, one that's supposed to be full of cowboys, big trucks, and mountain views.

To be fair, Cow-Town has come through on some of these promises, but also, there was a lot I had wrong.

I've called Calgary home for nearly a year now, and while there are some things I miss about my hometown of Ottawa, the cost of living is not one of them.

As a 20-something Canadian girl who is attempting to save money (not an easy feat... just look at the price of groceries right now), each and every penny counts. The promise of Alberta's lower cost of living helped tempt me to move west from Ontario, and now I'm here to convince you to do the same.

Everyone I know is moving to Calgary. Or, at least five people I know have — which in your 30s counts as a migration wave.

I see the appeal, don't get me wrong. Calgary has some tax advantages, a decent cost of living, and the commutes are shorter, but do those things even matter anymore? I'd save $6 on my vape and 30 minutes in traffic on a random Tuesday, sure. But at what cost?

People are packing up and heading West! Alberta was just named the leading growth province in the country for the second year in a row, and two of its cities are the most popular choices for Canadians.

Calgary and Edmonton were just crowned the top two Canadian cities for growth in 2024 by U-Haul’s Growth Index. The province has yet again welcomed the most one-way U-Haul movers, likely drawn in by the cheaper housing and cost of living options. Ontario, on the other hand, came in at the bottom of the ranking for growth provinces in 2024.
