If you're looking for fun things to do in Ottawa that won't break the bank, consider checking out one of the city's many green spaces.
The National Capital region has tons of public green spaces, from urban parks and rugged, untamed natural areas to trails for beginners and expert hikers alike.
For an easy hiking spot that's a bit under the radar, look no further than Sheila McKee Park. The conservation area, which is located along the Ottawa River's shore, is a peaceful place full of natural beauty, trails, water views and more.
The park can be found in the community of Dunrobin, just 25 minutes from downtown Ottawa.
Here, you'll find an easy hiking area, with 2 kilometres of trails that will take you through a forest of evergreens, past rocky formations and along the water's edge.
Within the park, mini waterfalls trickle down a rocky escarpment speckled with evergreens that grow through the cliff edges.
According to All Trails, the loop trail here is considered an easy hike, taking an average of 41 minutes to complete. A map of the loop trail in the park can be found online.
A series of wooden stairs lead from the forest trail to a small beach on the river. It's a peaceful spot to take a moment to relax as you take in views or enjoy a vibrant sunset.
The area is a great spot to visit year-round, with different offerings depending on the season. In summer, head here for the secluded beach area and to see the mini, cascading waterfalls; in winter, visit to see dramatic ice formations, or enjoy some cross-country skiing. In all seasons, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Ottawa River and the steep cliffs found here.
Dogs are allowed in the park, but should be kept on a leash. You may be able to spot some local wildlife during your visit, including salamanders, squirrels, porcupines and songbirds. Remember, however, to refrain from feeding them.
The park is located at 1730 Sixth Line Rd., north of Riddell Drive. To get there, you'll want to take the March Road exit off of Highway 417. Drive north on March Road and turn right onto Dunrobin Road, then right onto Riddell Drive. Follow Riddell Drive, which turns into Sixth Line Road. From there, you'll see signage for Sheila McKee Park and can turn right into the park driveway.
