Toronto Pearson Airpot warns of flight delays to New York area after an earthquake hit
Airline passengers heading to New York City or New Jersey on Friday should expect delays after an earthquake hit the U.S. travel hub.
The magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit at 10:23 a.m. on Friday morning, rattling New Jersey, New York and Boston, according to the U.S. Geological Service (USGS). The epicenter is said to be around Whitehouse Station, N.J.
Pearson airport warned on Friday that the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority had issued "several ground stops at airports including JFK and EWR after an earthquake appears to have hit the New York area." Pearson added that there "will likely be impacts to flights to and from these destinations."
The airport added that no flights had been cancelled due to the earthquake as of 11:30 a.m.
The FAA said on X the quake "may impact some air traffic facilities in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Baltimore." It added that "air traffic operations are resuming as quickly as possible."
In other words, you could be in for some delays if you're flying into or out of the New York area on Friday, although it sounds like they should be able to clear things up befor the end of the day.
The extent of the earthquake damage was not immediately clear on Friday morning, and there were no initial reports of specific damage at any airports. No deaths were immediately reported.
Earthquakes are rare in New Jersey compared to the West Coast of the country, particularly California, which sits on a fault line.
