Part of the charm of moving somewhere new is getting to know the local traditions, customs and even the way people speak. Every region has its own slang, and while we all live in Canada, it's amazing how different we can sound from coast to coast. The Maritimes are no exception. In fact, I'd argue they have some of the most unique phrases and lingo in the country.

Moving from Ontario to Prince Edward Island was a culture shock in more ways than one, and learning the local vocabulary was definitely part of the experience. There were plenty of words and expressions I'd never heard before, and more than once I found myself nodding along while secretly wondering what everyone was talking about.

I decided to move to Prince Edward Island after a summer spent in Charlottetown. It was a big change from living in Ontario, but that's exactly what I was looking for at the time. It turns out, though, there were a lot of things I didn't expect.

At first, the slower pace and change of scenery felt refreshing. But after a few years, the smallness and slowness of island life started to wear on me, among other things.

It's the epitome of peace and quiet — a departure from the realities of daily life, with postcard views that stretch as far as the eye can see, red-hued cliffsides, wave-like dunes that trickle into a soft-sand beach, and rolling farmland.

I moved to Prince Edward Island from the GTA in 2017. I had been completely enchanted by it after spending time there the previous summer, but moving there wasn't as seamless as I thought it would be.

There were things I hadn't considered about life on P.E.I. I thought life would be simpler — but in some ways, it actually became more complicated. It turns out, the island life wasn't for me.
