This small town in Alberta keeps getting ranked among the world's best travel destinations
2025 travel lists are popping up everywhere, and one Canadian destination is being put under the spotlight time and time again. It's a small town in Alberta that packs a big punch in terms of things to do, from wandering around the charming local businesses to exploring the great outdoors.
Banff isn't a new name for most, as one of the most popular tourist hot spots in the country. It seems like it's the place to go in the new year though.
Recently it was ranked as one of the most romantic winter getaway spots in the world, and before that, it was named the best place to visit in Canada in 2025. Oh, and it was also recognized among the world's best places to travel in January.
Now TripAdvisor has released the Travellers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best list, and Banff was the only Canadian spot to make the ranking.
It all begs the question – is Banff worth the hype?
One look at the picture-perfect town and you'll likely find that the answer is yes. The cozy streets are framed by the jagged peaks of the mountains, and lined with little shops and restaurants.
The surrounding area is the real draw though, because Banff National Park is irresistibly beautiful.
In the winter months, the hot spring is where you can go to soak in the natural minerals and look out onto the view of the mountains.
Then there are three ski resorts within the park and beautiful frozen lakes you can skate across. Lake Louise, which is within Banff National Park, is a go-to.
The upside of Banff being a busy tourist spot is the amount of activities there are.
You can check out the snow sculptures here at the end of January or go for a horse-drawn sleigh ride in the snowy months. Then there's also tubing, dog sledding, and hiking trails.
In the summer the snow melts and gives way to sparkling turquoise lakes, hiking trails filled with flowers in bloom, and rushing waterfalls.
The popularity comes at a cost though – literally. There's a price tag that comes along with a trip here.
Still, while the activities and stays are usually pretty expensive, you probably won't be disappointed by a visit here, if you're willing to pay for it.
Going in the summertime also opens up some great camping options, which saves on accommodation costs.
You can also opt for other spots to stay in the surrounding area. Canmore is just 20 minutes away and is another mountain town brimming with charm, and the same natural beauty of Banff.
