Sunny beaches might be a reprieve from the winter, but there's something about the snow-capped mountain tops and frozen lakes of Western Canada. It's the jaw-dropping scenery that wintry dreams are made of, and Banff — a small town about an hour and a half away from Calgary — is one of the best places to see it all.

Global recognition isn't something new for Banff, but Travel and Leisure named it one of the best places to travel in January, ranked with the likes of Los Cabos, Singapore, and Dubai.

Banff National Park offers up the Rocky Mountain views that are on the bucket list of many and makes a great ski destination in the winter. There's a ton to do from tubing and hiking to dog sledding — or you can just opt to walk around town.

The cozy downtown area has a bunch of shops and restaurants, and while it's busy during the tourist season it has that small-town charm still.

To warm up after exploring the outdoors you can soak in the mineral waters of the hot springs here. The Banff Upper hot springs sits at around 47°C, according to the website, making it the perfect way to chase away the chill of winter.
