Winter tends to call for a getaway. Something to liven up the dreary season and make it a bit more cheery. One small town in Alberta is the perfect place to do just that, and it made it onto a ranking of the best cheap winter vacations.

US News created the 2023 ranking by looking at "user votes in addition to factors like the cost and quality of accommodations, dining and attractions to narrow down the destinations with the best value – and weather – for a winter getaway."

15 spots were put under the spotlight, from sunshine-filled beach vacation destinations to mountain retreats. As you can expect, Alberta's addition to the list was the latter.

Banff came in at 13th place on the ranking, and although it's not known as the most affordable spot typically, US News had its reasonings.

"If you're itching to experience the lifestyle of a Swiss skiing village, but don't want to fork over the cash for a transatlantic flight, consider Banff," the ranking said.

"Banff caters to everyone from intrepid explorers who prefer to end the day in an upscale hotel, to tent and RV campers who fill the campgrounds from summer to fall. There’s even one campground that’s open year-round: Tunnel Mountain Village 2," it added.

Set in the Rockies Banff is the mountain town that fairytales are made of. The tiny town has picturesque storefronts with the backdrop of snowy peaks. Then there's Banff National Park, where you could spend weeks exploring and not get bored of the views.

In the winter you can stroll around town with some hot cocoa in hand, or get adventurous skiing, hiking, or skating. If you visit during the holidays you'll be that much more impressed, with all the events and festive decor the town puts on. There's also a cozy Christmas market that takes the holiday spirit up a notch.

With snow falling, the glow of the twinkling lights, and the sight of the mountains enclosing this spot, you'll feel like you've stepped into a winter wonderland here.
