6 charming small towns in Alberta that locals want to move to if they could live anywhere
Want a slower pace of life?

Canmore Alberta. Right: Medicine Hat Alberta.
Alberta appeals to many Canadians, thanks to the lower cost of living compared to other provinces, and of course the spectacular beauty of the Rockies. While cities like Calgary are hot spots, locals have shared some small towns that they are longing to call home, if they could live anywhere in the province.
We turned to Narcity readers to ask them where in Alberta they would want to call home if they could choose anywhere in the province. Responses poured in, and while some shouted out the main cities of Edmonton and Calgary, the small towns in Alberta really showed up and showed out.
Canmore
Canmore was a popular choice for people, and it's clear why. This small town is just an hour away from Calgary and is absolutely stunning. Nestled in the mountains this is the ideal town for the explorers out there.
It's known for its view of Three Sisters Mountain, which is a landmark of the area. Days here can be spent wandering the picturesque trails, popping into local galleries and shops, and strolling through the town center.
Medicine Hat
Although this is technically a city, Medicine Hat has a small-town feel and was a favourite choice among locals. This is also Canada's "sunniest city," so if you want blue skies even in the chilly winter months, this is the place to get it.
Of course, it also has the beautiful scenery that the province is known for on full display. Summers here are spent exploring the area with its mountains and rivers, and winters are cozying up in the little cafes.
Drumheller
Also a short drive from Calgary, Drumheller feels like it's a million miles away, set in the Canadian Badlands. The unique landscape of the area will make you feel like you're in another world, and you can explore the famous Drumheller Hoodoos and stunning canyons.
History buffs will love this place, as it's known for its large collection of dinosaur fossils. The town is proud of it too, as shown by the massive model of a T-Rex downtown.
Strathmore
This Southern Alberta town is about an hour from Calgary, but you'll feel far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. You have access to the hub of Calgary but can enjoy the slow pace here with a tight-knit community and loads of outdoor activities.
If you want a more affordable option and small-town lifestyle, this is the spot.
Banff
Banff isn't exactly a kept secret, by any means, but it's one of the most popular small towns in Alberta for a reason. The tiny community is brimming with charm with streets lined with quaint storefronts and great restaurants. Then there's the proximity to some of the best skiing around, hot springs, and jaw-dropping views.
Living here is like stepping into a fairytale (although a pricey one, to be fair), and you can soak up the beauty of the province to the max.
Cochrane
The western vibe of this town will make you feel like you've stepped back in time as you walk along the popular main street. With rolling foothills, you'll peak the mountains peaking up towards the sky in the distance and never want to leave.
Family-run businesses, ranching, and long stretches of open land all make this spot one of the most peaceful towns around.
