A small town near Calgary with incredible scenery was dubbed one of the most underrated spots

A getaway spot full of nature wonder.

Editor

This little town in Alberta is the gateway to some of the most incredible scenery in the country. While the province is known for the majestic peaks of the Rockies, in this small town you'll discover the beauty of the Canadian Badlands.

Drumheller has a few claims to fame, including being the "Dinosaur Capital of the World," and recently dubbed by locals on the Narcity Canada Facebook page as one of the most underrated destinations in Alberta.

Often overlooked by the temptation of the Rocky Mountains, Drumheller has natural beauty surrounding it that will leave you breathless. Here you'll wander past hoodoos, explore a vast canyon, and see ancient fossils that will transport you back in time.

It's as magical as it sounds, and calls for a little road trip from Calgary this summer. The drive from Calgary to Drumheller is just an hour and a half, although you feel far away from the bustle of the city streets here.

The small town has quaint vibes, with a unique Dino-twist. It has the "World’s Largest Dinosaur," which you can climb up into the mouth of to get a view of the town. Then there's the Royal Tyrrell Museum where you can learn more about the prehistoric past here. You can also take guided hikes through the museum through the badlands, discovering fossils.

The trails that wind are just outside of town are what draw many to visit. Horseshoe Canyon is a beloved one, with trails that give you incredible views of the sprawling landscape. You can walk along either side of the U-shaped canyon, which are about five kilometres, or opt for the viewing platform.

Horsethief Canyon is another stunning scene nearby, and it's set just off what's known as the "Dinosaur Trail," according to Travel Alberta.

A visit to Drumheller isn't complete without seeing the hoodoos, which are unique natural formations that you can see just 15 minutes from town.

From beautiful nature to getting a glimpse into the past – a trip to Drumheller is full of wonder.
