It might not be the beachy summer getaway you've been thinking about, but there's something about a summer escape into the mountains — fresh air, alpine meadows, glistening lakes and small towns surrounded by jagged peaks.

It's a vacation with the promise of endless views, adventure, and beauty around every turn.

We asked readers to share their top recommendations for a summer vacation in Canada, and one small town in Alberta made the cut. Set alongside ocean retreats and major city hubs, this destination offers a different type of summer fun.

Banff is a well known tourist hot spot — a picturesque small town that's everything you could want from a Rocky Mountain retreat. You've got the convenience of delicious restaurants, cozy cafes, and cute boutiques to shop, but are surrounded by wilderness.

In the winter Banff comes alive, as a go-to destination for skiing (with a few resorts nearby), and becoming especially magical during the holiday season. It's like a little Hallmark town, so tourists flock there during the colder months.

Summers here shouldn't be overlooked though. The town is just as cute and lively, and you can explore even more of the outdoors when it's warm. Lakes unfreeze to swim in, snow thaws to make way for hiking trails, and windows get rolled down for the road trip through Banff National Park.

Nothing beats a hike through the rocky mountains, or even a horseback riding tour if you really want to get adventurous. You can also rent a canoe or some kayaks and head out onto the water, exploring the idyllic lakes and mountain vistas.

If winding down is more you speed you can soak in the Banff Upper Hot springs, taking in the landscape while relaxing.

Get ready to soak in some nature and head out to this little town.
