With hashtags like #MoveToCanada taking over users' For You pages, it's clear that Canada isn't just popular to travel to — it's where everyone actually wants to move.
The study behind these viral stats comes from Remitly, a global financial services company, which dove into TikTok data to figure out which countries are inspiring the most relocation content. They tracked hashtags like #ExpatInCanada and #MoveToCanada, and the results speak volumes: Canada had over 16,500 hashtags related to expat life, topping the chart by a landslide.
And yes — that number absolutely dwarfs the U.S., which only managed just over 2,100 related hashtags. To put that another way, nearly eight times as many TikTokers are talking about moving to Canada compared to our neighbours to the south.

- Vietnam – 2,191 hashtags
- USA – 2,115 hashtags
European destinations made a strong showing, with sunny Spain and culture-rich Portugal pulling in major expat attention in second and fourth place, respectively. Australia also landed near the top, with its beaches and laid-back lifestyle helping it score over 9,300 expat-related hashtags on TikTok.
But Canada's status at the top might have something to do with more than just scenery. Amid global shifts — and ongoing U.S. political drama, including President Donald Trump's global trade war and sovereignty-related threats — the Great White North might look like a safe, stable and welcoming choice.
Remitly also shared some tips on how to prep for a big international move, with advice ranging from setting up your phone and money logistics early to building a solid support system once you arrive. And if TikTok's any indication, plenty of folks are documenting every step of that journey online.
