Just For Laughs has been cancelled for 2024 as the Montreal-based company Groupe Juste pour rire inc. announced this morning that it has filed for bankruptcy.
Those hoping to get a few laughs in at the various shows in Montreal and Toronto this summer are out of luck but it looks like it's not all bad news for the future.
"Unfortunately, the 2024 edition of the Just for Laughs / Juste pour rire festival will not take place, at least not at the same time and in the same form as it customarily has," the company said via a press release.
"Once the restructuring is completed, we hope that the festival will take place in 2025."
The company cited the pandemic and a radically changed media industry among some of the challenges they've faced in the past few years.
"The purpose of the restructuring is to allow the business to emerge stronger and healthier, and successfully position the festival and the other JPR properties for the long term to preserve the rich 40-year legacy of Just for Laughs / Juste pour rire, ensuring it is better equipped to meet the challenges of an ever-changing entertainment landscape," the company said.
As of the time of publishing, tickets for the 2024 Montreal show were still available for purchase. No information has emerged as yet for those seeking refunds.
