5 Alberta filming locations in 'The Last Of Us' and Pedro Pascal loves one magical town
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are the duo we didn't know we needed until HBO's The Last Of Us premiered and we all collectively fell in love. Since the series hit the streaming service in 2023 fans have been anxiously awaiting season two — which is now set to release in 2025.
The show holds an extra special space in the hearts of Albertans though, as it puts the beauty of the province on full display. The Last Of Us season one filming locations are scattered around Alberta, making for a spectacular backdrop.
The show is an adaptation of a hit video game and follows the story of two people – Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (played by Bell Ramsey) — as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world after a pandemic leads to civilization crumbling and humans becoming cannibalistic monsters.
The show gained a huge fanbase and put loads of stunning Alberta locations under the spotlight. The series kept its production in Canada for season two, moving over to B.C. for filming. The exact release date is yet to be announced, but the season two trailer gave a sneak peek at some beautiful B.C. filming locations. Throughout the filming process, filming crews were also spotted in Vancouver transforming the city into the post-apocalyptic world of The Last Of Us.

Canmore
This little mountain town is a popular tourist spot in real life and was also a filming location for the show that captured the hearts of its stars.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey agreed that Canmore was their favourite place they got to explore in the province, in an interview with Mobile Syrup. Pascal praised the "magical little town" and the tasty fudge they have there.
In the show, the town doubles as Jackson, Wyoming, and looks every bit the part. Rocky peaks and unreal scenery are trademarks of this spot.
Calgary
Downtown Calgary was transformed into a post-apocalyptic city with abandoned cars and wrecked streets — playing Kansas City in the show.
Some of the filming locations in the city included Centennial Place and Calgary Courts Centre. TLOU cast was also spotted around the city, at popular restaurants and attractions
High River
This small town right outside of Calgary made it into the series repeatedly.
In episode three of the first season, an abandoned estate in High River is the backdrop for Bill and Frank's compound. On route there Joel and Ellie pass through some of Alberta's signature beautiful landscapes.
Evelyn's Memory Lane Diner in this town is also shown in the series.
Fort Macleod
Fort Macleod doubles as Austin, Texas in the show, with its historic and picturesque main street and old-fashioned buildings.
The "Outbreak Day" scenes in the series were filmed on Main Street here, as Joel tries to flee the city. Several other scenes in the show also take place here.
Waterton
This picturesque mountain town is dreamy in real life but was quite the opposite in the show. The lakeside town in Waterton Lakes National Park appeared in the series, presented as a snowy wilderness in Colorado.
These beautiful spots around Alberta are stunning backdrops for TLOU and worth a visit, especially for fans out there who want to wander around where Pascal and Ramsey did.
While season two is set to have a different part of the country on display, it'll likely be just as breathtaking to see on screen.
