Canada's most popular baby names were revealed and long-time favourites didn't make the cut
A new list of the most popular baby names in Canada has been released.
Some long-time favourites didn't make the cut, while a few new names surged up the ranking.
Statistics Canada put out new baby name data on September 24, 2025.
The national statistical agency used its own Canadian Vital Statistics — Birth database and the List of Baby Names database from Retraite Québec to figure out the most popular baby names in Canada for 2024.
More than 6,000 distinct names were given to babies across the country last year, according to Statistics Canada.
These are the top baby names for boys in Canada:
- Noah
- Liam
- Theodore
- Leo
- William
- Oliver
- Lucas
- James
- Benjamin
- Thomas
That's followed by Jack, Henry, Nathan, Adam, Ethan, Levi, Theo, Arthur, Jacob and Logan.
Statistics Canada's new data revealed that James moved up three spots from 2023, and Levi surged up four spots in this ranking.
Noah has been the most commonly used name for boys in this country since 2021.
Meanwhile, Owen dropped out of the top 20 most popular baby names in this ranking.
But Arthur made the top 20 after not cracking the list in 2023.
These are the top baby names for girls in Canada:
- Olivia
- Charlotte
- Emma
- Amelia
- Sophia
- Sofia
- Mia
- Chloe
- Lily
- Ava
That's followed by Mila, Alice, Isla, Nora, Evelyn, Maya, Violet, Ellie, Sophie and Clara.
According to this new Statistics Canada data, Charlotte has overtaken Emma as the second most popular girl name.
Olivia is still the most commonly used baby name for girls in Canada, and it's held the top spot since 2016.
In the 2024 ranking, Zoe and Charlie dropped out of the top 20.
Violet and Clara claimed spots in the top 20 after not making the list in 2023.
Based on the Statistics Canada baby name data, Charlie was in the top 20 from 2020 to 2023.
Owen and Zoe were in the top 20 for more than a decade, but those names aren't as popular with parents now.
The new names on this list — Arthur, Violet and Clara — actually feel like old names you'd expect someone's grandpa or grandma to have.
If you're wondering just how common the top baby names are, Noah was used 2,115 times and Olivia was used 1,639 times in 2024.
Statistics Canada's data also revealed the names that parents gave to both boys and girls last year.
That includes names that made the top 20, like Noah, James, Levi, Theo, and Logan.
Some of the other popular baby names for boys and girls in 2024 were Maverick, Wyatt, Jayden, Beau, Kai, Rowan, Carter, Jasper, Milan, August, Hunter, Atlas, Parker, Rory, Riley, Blake, River, Walker, Rayan, Casey, Bowen, Hayes, Nirvair, Tate, Avery, Mehtab, Spencer, Anhad, Drew, Lennon, Sidak, Nova, Rehmat, Sydney, and Harper.
