An Elderly Woman Has Been Fatally Struck By A TTC Van In Toronto's Chinatown Neighbourhood
UPDATE: The Toronto Police Service released a press statement on Monday at 9:31 p.m., stating that the pedestrian was a 73-year-old woman who was "walking westbound on Dundas Street West in the eastern pedestrian crosswalk." A 56-year-old man was driving a "2020 Ford RMG commercial van" and made a right turn northbound to Spadina Avenue when he struck the woman crossing.
A pedestrian was fatally struck by a TTC vehicle on Monday in one of Toronto's most popular and busy neighbourhoods.
On Monday, the Toronto Police Services tweeted that a "pedestrian [was] struck by a vehicle" at 11:17 a.m., and the "driver has remained on scene."
They first mentioned that the injuries "appear life-threatening," but less than an hour later, they put out an updated tweet stating "the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene."
Toronto police spokesperson Constable Laura Brabant told Narcity that "the victim is a woman in her 70s."
Additionally, the vehicle involved in the ongoing investigation is a TTC van, the spokesperson added.
The fatal incident occurred on the corner of Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue.
Toronto police closed the intersection earlier on Monday as they continued investigating. Some TTC services were detoured away from the incident, but they have since resumed.
TTC tweeted at around 4:30 p.m. that they are aware of the incident involving "a non-revenue TTC vehicle" and do not yet "have any information as to cause."
"Our thoughts are with all involved in the wake of this tragedy. As always, police have our full cooperation as they investigate," they added.
