This quaint village near Ottawa has a dazzling Christmas market inspired by the ones in Europe
If you're craving a charming winter escape that's just a quick road trip from Ottawa, this quaint small town might be exactly what you're looking for. With its snow-dusted streets, European vibes, and cozy holiday activities, it'll make you feel like you've been transported to a Hallmark movie.
Montebello, Quebec, is only around an hour from Ottawa. It's close enough to make it a day trip, but once you're there, you'll probably want to stay a night or two and soak up its charm.
On the weekends of November 29 to December 1, and December 6 to 8, Montebello hosts its annual Christmas Market, or "Marché de Noël de Montebello."
Inspired by Europe's iconic holiday markets, this seasonal celebration brings all the cozy feels with twinkling lights, festive decor, and nearly 50 vendors selling handmade gifts, treats, and holiday goodies.
During the holiday market, there's live music to enjoy, Santa's cabin for photos, and plenty of hot chocolate to keep you warm while you browse.
The market is set up in the heart of the village, right next to the historic church, giving it a storybook feel that'll make you feel like you're the star of the latest Hallmark holiday movie.
Montebello may be tiny, with fewer than 1,000 residents, but it's packed with things to see and do once you're done with the market.
Just outside the village, you'll find Parc Omega, a safari park where you can drive through a snowy wonderland full of Canadian wildlife. Watch for wolves, bison, and elk wandering through the snow, and don’t forget to bring carrots — the deer will often walk right up to your car window for a snack.
If you're up for a little luxury, the Fairmont Le Château Montebello is a must-see. This stunning log cabin hotel is the largest of its kind in the world, and it's as cozy as it gets during the colder months.
Inside, there's a six-sided stone fireplace at the center of the lobby, perfect for warming up with a hot drink.
The hotel offers a bunch of winter comforts, from an indoor pool to cross-country ski trails. And if you're feeling fancy, their spa has massages and facials to help you relax after a chilly day out.
History buffs can add the Manoir Papineau National Historic Site to their must-see list. This elegant manor was once the home of politician Louis-Joseph Papineau. In the winter, the estate grounds look like a postcard with snow-covered trees and paths that are ideal for a peaceful stroll or snowshoeing.
For a taste of Montebello's local flavours, swing by Fromagerie Montebello, a cozy cheese shop loved by locals. Nearby, you'll also find Microbrasserie Les Brasseurs de Montebello, a craft brewery with a rotating selection of sips that are perfect for a little winter cheer.
Montebello's main street is dotted with small shops and cafes, many of which sell locally crafted items like handmade mittens, maple syrup, and wool scarves that are perfect for the season.
There's also a quaint pottery studio, La Shed Qui Tourne, where you can pick up one-of-a-kind pieces or sign up for the studio experience to create of your own piece of art.
