In response to the Omicron variant of concern, Canada's travel restrictions are being updated to include an official warning that trips outside of Canada are not recommended.

On December 15, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced that the federal government is immediately advising Canadians to avoid all non-essential international travel outside of Canada.

With all of the major travel changes that are taking off within the next month, Narcity reached out to Pearson Airport to ask what its plans are, and what flyers can do to best prepare for travelling.

The first changes come into effect on October 30, when all travellers departing from Canadian airports will have to be fully vaccinated in order to travel. But the bulk of the rules are set to update in November, when fully vaccinated Canadians can travel to the U.S. for non-essential purposes, and when Canada's vaccine passport for international travel will officially be required.

Although Canada has finally lifted its non-essential travel advisory, the feds still have some recommendations in place when it comes to heading abroad.

As of Friday, October 22, officials were no longer urging Canadians to avoid all discretionary travel overseas. This is the first time since March 2020 that Canadians have been given the go-ahead to take international trips.

The European Union is recommending that travel restrictions for Canadians be lifted which would allow non-essential travel to restart between Canada and Europe.

In a notice shared on July 1, the European Council announced that Canada, among other countries, should be added to a list of states approved for discretionary travel.
