The Ontario government just revealed it is doling out a lot of cash to all of the local businesses in Ottawa that were hit hard by the effects of the Freedom Convoy protests.

In a news release posted on March 4, the provincial government announced that they will be handing out $11.5 million to all of Ottawa's local businesses that were affected by the weeks-long occupation.

While many have been excited and ready for life to return to a familiar sense of normal, many businesses and residents of Ottawa alike are still concerned for their health and safety. As of March 1, the province of Ontario is lifting restrictions including the proof of vaccination requirement in non-essential businesses such as restaurants and theatres.

The government has put it to the discretion of business owners to decide if they plan on keeping vaccination requirements or not. A number of Ottawa restaurants and shops feel that the best decision, for the time being, is to keep asking for the vaccine passport for indoor dining and activities.

In unison with much of the world, many Ottawa businesses are showing their support for Ukraine following Russia's invasion of the country. In addition to sharing resources and voicing our support, there are more ways to help.

We may feel helpless and dishearted with what is taking place overseas, but there are many ways as Canadians, and specifically in Ottawa that we can send support to the country of Ukraine. While some Ottawa shops are setting up donation boxes and sending some sales proceeds to Ukrainian charities, there are ways for us to donate directly from home and stay informed as well as Ukrainian-Canadian businesses we can visit.

To help with the impacts of the Freedom Convoy on local Ottawa businesses since the blockade started, the federal government is going to be giving out money that won't have to be paid back.

During a press conference on February 19 to provide an update on the ongoing situation in Ottawa, officials announced that the federal government is investing up to $20 million through FedDev Ontario to help downtown Ottawa businesses.
