This Ontario park is a mini paradise with 'jungle-like' forests and 20 km of sandy beaches
You'll forget you're in Canada at this stunning national park in Ontario. With silky sand beaches, crystal waters, and lush forests, it's like a little piece of the tropics.
Point Pelee National Park is a dreamy destination nestled along the shores of Lake Erie in Essex County, about 3 and a half hours from Toronto.
According to Visit Windsor Essex, it's "a tiny sanctuary supporting a mosaic of habitats from jungle-like forest to lush wetlands to open savannah."
This park marks the southernmost point of mainland Canada, and you can even hike to its very edge by following the Tip Trail, a one-kilometre loop that takes about 30 minutes to finish.
Some other picturesque hikes at Point Pelee include the March Boardwalk — a one-kilometre loop with an observation tower and telescope, and the Tilden Woods Trail, which takes you through a mature swamp forest and savannah.
You can also explore the Chinquapin Oak Trail, which features a "mixed dry forest that includes Chinquapin Oak, a species found as far south as the cloud forests of Mexico," according to the park's website.
Bring your bathing suit! The park is home to the "longest continuous natural beach in Essex County," with 20 kilometres of smooth sand on the peninsula's west and east sides.
Northwest Beach and West Beach are two of the park's most popular beaches. They offer bathrooms, change rooms, and picnic areas. Swimming at the Tip is prohibited.
Other activities at the park include canoeing, cycling, bird watching and stargazing.
If you're looking for an incredible nature adventure, Point Pelee National Park is the place to be.
