If you've got plans to visit the United States in the coming weeks, listen up! Canada has issued a "safety and security" update to its U.S. travel advisory, and travellers should take note.
On Wednesday, June 11, Canada made an update to its U.S. travel advisory in response to the ongoing demonstrations in Los Angeles and other major cities.
While the overall risk level for the U.S. remains at "Take normal security precautions" — the lowest on Canada's scale — officials are urging Canadians to exercise increased caution in affected areas.
"Since June 6, 2025, large demonstrations have been taking place in Los Angeles. Demonstrations are also occurring in other major cities," the travel warning reads.
"Additional security forces have been deployed, and a curfew is in effect for most of downtown Los Angeles from 8 pm to 6 am. Additional curfew orders may be imposed on short notice."
Canadians currently in or planning to visit protest-affected zones are strongly advised to avoid demonstrations, follow all directives from local authorities, including curfews, and stay informed by monitoring local media.
The demonstrations stem from public opposition to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions as part of the federal government's intensified immigration crackdown. Protests have been ongoing since Friday last week.
ICE agents have reportedly conducted immigration-related arrests at courthouses, workplaces, schools, local businesses and within communities across the country.
Tensions escalated following President Donald Trump's decision to deploy thousands of National Guard troops and Marines to quell the unrest, CBS News reports.
Although most protests have remained peaceful, sporadic violence erupted over the weekend and on Monday, resulting in arrests.
It's not the first time Canada's travel advisory for the United States has been updated in response to changing circumstances.
In April 2025, the United States introduced new regulations requiring foreign visitors, including Canadians, who plan to stay longer than 30 days to register with U.S. authorities.
