The province got some good news this week as new Ontario cases of COVID-19 appear to be dropping. The province’s new case count continued its downward trend on Thursday, dipping down to 203. This marks the lowest daily increase in nearly 11 weeks.

According to the Government of Ontario, these new cases are only a 0.6% increase in the total number of cases province-wide.

Currently, there are 31,544 cases of COVID-19 across Ontario. However, over 82% of those have been resolved.

Ontario’s new COVID-19 cases have been steadily dropping through the week, with numbers floating below the 300 mark.

CP24 reports that this is the lowest number that the province has seen since late March.

Ontario's Minister of Health, Christine Elliott, states that testing is at an all-time high, as the province continues to monitor active cases.

"Testing is at an all-time high, with 24,341 processed yesterday. Having processed nearly 925,000 tests since the outbreak started, Ontario now ranks second in Canada in cumulative per capita testing, behind only Alberta. With our population size, that’s a remarkable milestone," Elliott stated in a tweet.

However, as the numbers continue to lower, Premier Doug Ford revealed that most of the province would begin stage two of the government’s gradual reopening this Friday.

The beginning of stage two will allow restaurants, hair salons and other businesses to reopen across the country.

Yet, areas with high case numbers including the Greater Toronto Area will remain in stage one.

Currently, the majority of new cases are still coming from the GTA.

While numbers continue to drop, regions such as Hamilton and Peel have reported that the number of young people getting COVID-19 has been increasing.

Forty-three percent of people from Hamilton who tested positive for COVID-19 in the 10 days leading up to June 5 were in their 20s.
