If you've got plans to head northwest of Calgary this week, you might want to take note.

On Tuesday morning, October 6, the Municipal District of Bighorn issued a local state of emergency due to an "out of control" wildfire. This Alberta wildfire originated at a location just 75 kilometres away from Calgary.

The Weather Network reported that the wildfire is moving in a southeast direction and was last spotted 30 kilometres west of Benchlands.

People in the surrounding area should be aware that evacuation may be required.

The district reported earlier that the status of the wildfire was at "Being Held" on Monday night.

But a "wind event" later on Monday night resulted in the worsening of the conditions.

Therefore, the status was changed to Out Of Control. It's estimated that the wildfire has affected 3624 hectares of terrain at the time of writing.

The district said that 23 firefighters and six helicopters have been deployed to fight the fire.

Alberta Wildfire tweeted that the forest area around Devil's Head is closed until further notice. They also said, "The wildfire danger rating for the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) remains VERY HIGH in the north and EXTREME in the south."
