A fire and an explosion have destroyed a home in a rural subdivision south of Calgary.

The blaze forced two people out of the residence and scattered white insulation around the neighbourhood on North Coulee Trail, northeast of Okotoks, Alta.

Fire crews were called at about 7 a.m. with a report of the explosion, which blew the roof off the house.

Dave Simms, deputy chief of the Foothills Fire Department, says the two homeowners were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Crews sprayed water on the two-storey house as flames and heavy smoke continued to billow out of the structure.

Officials have not confirmed the cause of the fire or the blast.
