Police in Fort St. John, B.C., say the suspect in what they describe as a violent home invasion and sexual assault Tuesday night remains at large.

Mounties in the northern British Columbia city say a man entered a home on 87 Street near the intersection with 89 Ave. at about 11 p.m. after following a woman who lived there.

They say people inside the home initially scared the man off and called police, who searched the neighbourhood.

But they didn't find the suspect, and police say he went back to the home, where he sexually assaulted a second resident.

Cpl. Jennifer Cooper says in a statement the behaviour is "very concerning" and police believe the man may attempt to reoffend.

The Mounties say they've been working to identify the suspect, described as a tall, heavy-set man with a beard in his mid-30s, and anyone with information, including surveillance or dash-camera footage, is asked to contact them.
