Talk about pedal to the metal! The Ontario Provincial Police's Ottawa detachment tweeted on Friday morning that they caught a driver speeding almost 200 km/h on Highway 417.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. on June 24, the OPP East Region tweeted that they caught a driver going 198 km/h on Highway 417. The speed limit on Highway 417 ranges from 100 to 110 km/h, meaning that the driver was going nearly twice as fast as the posted speed.

A 28-year-old Ottawa Police Service officer died as a result of a "serious motorcycle collision" while he was off-duty Tuesday night.

Constable Vijayalayan Mathiyalaghan, who went by the nickname "Vijay," was in an accident on June 14 at around 8:40 p.m. The collision happened at Ottawa Regional Road 174 and Highway 417 in Ottawa's east end.

The former military member was with the Ottawa Police Service for just over a year and a half when the accident happened.

"He was a kind, friendly and gentle young man who was a credit to the Service and to the community he served with pride and dedication," said Ottawa Police in a tweet on Thursday.

Ottawa Police went on to say, "This is an exceptionally difficult time for those who knew Vijay."

"Our hearts go out to his family, friends and colleagues. We want to thank all of the emergency responders who rendered assistance at the scene, on and off-duty, including paramedics and Ottawa Hospital staff.
Vijay will be missed."

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit is investigating an incident concerning a 61-year-old man who fell from an Ottawa overpass around midnight on June 2.

At around 8:45 a.m. on June 2, the East Region of the Ontario Provincial Police said police responded to the incident on Highway 417 at Woodroffe Avenue. The police said that the man sustained injuries from the fall.

On the same day, the Ontario Special Investigations Unit said that it was investigating the incident in a press release. The unit noted that the man's injuries were serious.

After a preliminary investigation, the Ontario Special Investigations Unit found that the man went up on a barrier and held onto a sign when police arrived on the scene.

The unit adds that the man and an officer had a brief engagement before the man fell to the highway from the overpass. He was then taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries.
