Ontario provincial police say they’re investigating if a lack of seatbelts contributed to the deaths of four young people and injuries to two others after the vehicle they were travelling in careened into a ravine in Puslinch, Ont., just outside Guelph.

The OPP says the single-vehicle crash happened early Saturday along Watson Road South, where the car left the road and struck a guardrail before falling into a ravine.

Six young people from the Greater Toronto Area were inside, police say, and four were pronounced dead at the scene – two 19-year-old men from Mississauga and Brampton, a 17-year-old girl from Mississauga and a 15-year-old girl from Milton.

The OPP says a 17-year-old girl from Mississauga remains in hospital with life-altering injuries after the crash, while a 16-year-old from Mississauga sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

At a news conference on Sunday, OPP Insp. Karen Medeiros called the fatal crash an “unimaginable loss” and a “heartbreaking reminder of the lives that can be forever changed by a serious collision.”

She says investigators believe the vehicle that crashed did not have enough seatbelts for all six occupants, but police are also probing if speed was a factor.

Police are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area to come forward.
