Canadian Celeb News: Dan Levy's 'Barbie' Regret & Jared Leto's Big Sequel In Vancouver

Justin Bieber also shared a collaboration he did for the NHL All-Star Weekend.

Senior Writer

From a Canadian actor sharing a major Hollywood regret to a film production about to start up in Vancouver, a lot happened over the weekend in terms of celebrity news.

Schitt's Creek star Dan Levy spoke out about having to turn down a role in the hit film Barbie and says the decision still "haunts" him. In other news, Morbius actor Jared Leto is back in Vancouver to work on a new film project.

Here's what Levy, Leto and other big-name stars were up to over the weekend.

Dan Levy

Canadian actor Dan Levy revealed which big movie role he had to turn down in 2023 and that he still thinks about it.

In an interview with People, Levy said he had to turn down the role of one of the Kens in the Barbie film due to another project he was working on.

"Does it haunt me when I sleep at night? Sometimes. It's not like it isn't like one of the biggest movies of all time. That was a tough, that was a tough day," he told People.

That means had Levy taken the role the film would have had three Canadian Kens, including Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu.

Ryan Gosling

Speaking of Ryan Gosling, it was a big weekend for the Barbie star.

Gosling attended the Critic's Choice Awards on Sunday where his role in the Greta Gerwig film celebrated more wins.

The tune the actor sang in the film, "I'm Just Ken," won Best Song at the awards show and Gosling appeared stunned by the win.

His reaction has been making headlines ever since.

While he was supposed to go up on stage to receive the award, Gosling stayed put in his seat while the two writers of the song went up there.

That wasn't the only awards show appearance for Gosling over the weekend.

On Saturday, Gosling was at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival where he received yet another award.

The Canadian actor received the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film.

In true Gosling fashion, the Notebook star praised all the women in his life during his acceptance speech, as per a report by People.

"Most importantly, I got to meet the girl of my dreams, Eva Mendes, and have two dream children," Gosling said when talking about what acting has given him. He also gave a shout-out to his mom, Donna.

Steve Carell

Steve Carell shared a heartwarming story about Ryan Gosling over the weekend at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Carell was one of the stars to speak about Gosling ahead of the Canadian actor receiving the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film.

In his speech, Carell spoke about how he and Gosling once shared their weekend plans after they had wrapped up a shoot. That's when Gosling told Carell about how his band was going to play a gig at a senior's centre in Glendale, California on a Friday night.

"Isn't that just adorable?" Carell said to the crowd.

"A movie star would have told that story on a talk show [...] would have gotten some juice out of it, monetized it, maybe goes viral, has a GIF or a meme. But not Ryan Gosling. He did it just to make some old folks happy and I find that annoying as hell."

Jared Leto

Jared Leto is back in Vancouver.

The Morbius actor shared the news on his Instagram stories Sunday night.

Leto posted a photo of himself and a caption saying, "Goodbye LA thanks for the great show last night. OFF TO VANCOUVER FOR TRON."

According to Collider, Tron: Ares started filming in Vancouver in 2023, but production was shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

With the Disney film back in production, hopefully, Leto will be sharing photos from the set and his time in Vancouver.

Greta Lee, Evan Peters and Cameron Monaghan are also part of the cast.

Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan had some fun this weekend.

The Canadian actress shared a photo from Scooter's Roller Palace, which is a roller skating rink in Mississauga, on Sunday and it looks like she had a blast.

"Fell on my ass, I suck at this but I love it," she wrote in the caption.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber's clothing brand Drew House partnered with the NHL and Adidas to design four jerseys for the 2024 NHL All-Star Game.

The Canadian singer shared photos of the designs on his social media over the weekend.

The jerseys come in four colours - red, white, blue and yellow.

Last week it was confirmed that Bieber would be at the NHL All-Star Weekend when he shared a video message from Toronto Maple Leaf Auston Matthews on his Instagram.

The three-day event will be held in Toronto from February 1-3.

Connor McDavid

One of the biggest stars of the NHL celebrated his birthday on Saturday.

The Edmonton Oilers gave a shout-out to team captain Connor McDavid on their Instagram page in celebration of McDavid's 27th birthday.

"Happy 27th birthday to the one and only, Connor McDavid!" the caption said alongside several photos of McDavid over the years.

The team shared another post with a bunch of McDavid's impressive stats like the fact that he's the youngest captain in NHL history and a seven-time NHL All-Star.

Tie Domi

Canadian hockey legend Tie Domi had a father-daughter weekend.

The former NHL star shared photos from the Madonna concert they went to in Toronto on Friday night.
