Travellers Will Have To Pay Over $2K For Hotel Quarantine Because Travel Is A 'Choice'

With Canada's hotel quarantine rule, travellers will have to pay more than $2,000 out of their own pockets for their stay because they made the "choice" to travel.

After the new requirement for people entering the country was announced, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair went into detail about why travellers have to pay.

Justin Trudeau mentioned that travellers will have to wait for their post-travel test at their own expense and that's estimated to cost over $2,000.

Blair explained that if people are going to travel for non-essential reasons, then "they should bear the full cost and responsibility of all the measures that are necessary to keep Canadians safe as a result of the choices that they made."

He also went through the cost associated with the new quarantine requirement.

It includes not just the hotel room, but health and safety measures to protect staff, security measures, testing measures and transportation measures.

Blair said that Canadian taxpayers should not be "on the hook for paying any part of the cost for the choice and decision" someone made to travel for non-essential reasons.

Other travel restrictions were also announced including proof of a negative COVID-19 test to enter Canada from the U.S. by land.

Also, Canadian airlines are suspending flights to "sun destinations" and international flights are only allowed to land at four Canadian airports.
