A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged following what police describe as a violent home invasion and sexual assault in northeastern British Columbia.

Mounties in Fort St. John, B.C., say the alleged attack happened late Tuesday, when a man reportedly entered a residence on 87 Street after following a woman to her home.

Police say people inside the home initially scared the man off and called officers, who conducted a search but did not find the suspect.

The alleged attacker then reportedly re-entered the home, where he sexually assaulted a second resident before fleeing.

Police say the suspect was identified and arrested on Wednesday.

The man has been charged with four offences, including sexual assault with a weapon, breaking and entering a residence to commit an indictable offence, uttering threats and forcible confinement.

Police had described the attack as "very concerning" due to the suspect possibly reoffending while on the loose, but now say there's no ongoing risk to the public after the arrest.
