It's like a little slice of Europe.

Lead Writer, Travel

You can discover Canada's "most beautiful village" right here in Ontario. With storybook streets and historic charm, this enchanting small town is a dreamy spot to explore.

Merrickville is a picturesque community nestled along the shores of the Rideau Canal, just an hour away from Ottawa. The town was named "Canada's Most Beautiful Village" in 1998 by Communities in Bloom. It offers charming old-world buildings, local shops, cozy cafés, and pretty waterfront views, making it an idyllic spot for a getaway.

You can spend your day wandering along the quaint main street, where you'll find all sorts of unique shops and boutiques. From jewelry to sweets and home decor, there are so many items to discover.

Some of the village's charming stores include the Knock Knock Shoppe, Pickle & Myrrh, Wick Witch Apothecary and Chaiya Home & Garden Decor.

You'll also want to check out Merrickville's art scene, which features glassblowers, potters, painters, sculptures and more.

When it comes to dining, there are several restaurants and eateries to satisfy your cravings, such as The Goose & Gridiron, Yellow Canoe Cafe and Iron Forge Pizza.

If you're looking to enjoy the outdoors, this spot is the place to be. According to the town's website, "Merrickville has something for everyone with activities such as fishing, canoeing and kayaking, cycling, hiking and walking, birdwatching, skating, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and more."

Other attractions include the Rideau Canal, Rideau Canal Locks and Merrickville Blockhouse Museum.

If you're craving some small-town charm and European vibes, you might want to plan a trip to Merrickville.
