Oakville residents are currently being asked by Halton Police to shelter in place amid an "active situation."

All residents near the area of Lakeshore Road West between 4th Line and Birch Hill Lane are being asked to remain in their basements as gunshots have been heard nearby.

Appleby College is also currently in a hold and secure. "Staff and students are to remain inside their facilities until further notice," police wrote at 1:50 p.m. on Friday.

The initial call, reporting possible gunfire in the area, was received shortly before 1:20 p.m., say police.

"This is still an active situation," tweeted Halton Police.

Halton Police have clarified that the situation is contained to a residence on Lakeshore Road West and involves at least two barricaded individuals within that residence. Crisis negotiators will be working on the situation shortly.*

"There is a heavy police presence in this area, including frontline officers, our Tactical Rescue Unit, and K9."
