Can't decide where to start? Let the experts decide for you. Narcity reached out to some of the local restaurants on Jarritos' list to get some insight into the city's best tacos. Here's what staff members at each restaurant had to say about why their tacos are the best around.
Austin Taco From Gringo
Address: 27 Blood Alley Sq., Vancouver, BC
Why You Need To Try It: The aptly named Austin Taco is a Tex-Mex lover's dream. Gringo's beef brisket's smoked for eight hours with birchwood, alderwood, maple and numerous fruitwoods. The brisket's then tossed in the restaurant's homemade barbecue sauce and garnished with a signature slaw and Funions.
If you want something heartier, you have to try a mega burrito — it's sure to satisfy the biggest of appetites. Gringo tells Narcity these tacos are "heftier than a newborn baby" and stuffed with Mexican rice, refried beans, cabbage, corn, cheddar, salsa and sour cream. Can you taste it already?
Baja Fish Tacos From Tacomio
Address: 1245 Glen Dr., Vancouver, BC
Why You Need To Try It: This family-run restaurant is home to mouthwatering Baja fish tacos, made with beer-battered wild Pacific cod on a handmade flour tortilla. The cod's freshly fried to ensure maximum crispiness and topped with fresh red cabbage, pico de gallo, and chipotle mayo.
If fish isn't for you, you can opt for the restaurant's famous quesabirria, made with fresh ingredients and quality beef. This dish is so popular thanks to Tacomio's family recipe, which has been passed down through generations.
Quesabirria From Lucky Taco
Address: 1685 Yew St., Vancouver, BC
Why You Need To Try It: A taste of Lucky Taco's mouthwatering quesabirria (a cross between a taco and a quesadilla) will have you craving it at random hours of the day. The taco's made with braised lamb shoulder, onions, cilantro, cheese, pickled jalapeños and paired with traditional consommé to top it off.
You'll thank your lucky stars for being introduced to this classic dish.
Carne Asada Taco From Maizal
Address: 2815 Main St., Vancouver, BC
Why You Need To Try It: Maizal's known for its fresh tortillas, made in house with a blend of white and premium yellow corn. The most popular dish on the menu is the carne asada taco, which is filled with thinly sliced rib eye, guacamole, cilantro, and a side of pico de gallo. Classic and delicious.
Some other notable mentions are the pastor taco and pescado taco. Maizal also reportedly has the best burritos, according to some of its loyal customers. If you're curious, stop by and see for yourself.
Quesabirria Taco From Top Rope Birria
Address: Pop-up locations around Vancouver
Why You Need To Try It: Another hot spot, Top Rope Birria is home to one of the most yummy quesabirrias in the city. This dish is entirely made from scratch with a fresh corn tortilla, six-hour braised beef and served with authentic birria consommé.
According to the restaurant, if you want an extra kick, you can add a cheese skirt or kimchi to your taco. How delectable does that sound? Wash it all down with your favourite flavour of Jarritos and have yourself the perfect meal.
Carnitas From The Pawn Shop
Address: 1117 Granville St., Vancouver, BC
Why You Need To Try It: You and your crew have to try this spot's modern take on the classic carnitas taco. Think braised pork shoulder, white cabbage, cilantro, pico de gallo, pickled onions, crispy shallots and chipotle aioli.
If you hit up the restaurant during happy hour, you can get this delicious dish for just $1.99. It's a classic item on The Pawn Shop's menu, along with the OG Dirty Burrito, filled with carne mezclada, cilantro-lime rice, burnt lime crema and pico de gallo. This burrito stands out from the rest because it's wrapped in a cheese blanket!
Address: 560 Davie St., Yaletown, Vancouver, BC
Why You Need To Try It: Experience the authentic Mexican tradition of tortillerias in Vancouver's Yaletown. Chancho's tortillas are made daily with non-GMO native or ancient corn, imported directly from independent Mexican farmers.
Chancho tells Narcity that the staff never tires of eating the made-from-scratch campechano (shoulder and belly) carnitas tacos. After you've ordered your own, you can check out Chancho's menu board where you'll find information about the origins of your tortilla and the family that grew the corn you're about to eat.
