Heads up, parents! It's almost time for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) to hit bank accounts again, offering a helpful financial boost for eligible families across the country.

The Canada Child Benefit is a tax-free payment that arrives every month to help families with the cost of raising children under 18. Administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), it's aimed at giving Canadian parents the support they need to ensure their kids have access to essential resources.

This month, eligible Canadians can expect to receive their CCB payment on Friday, September 20.

Here's everything you need to know about the Canada Child Benefit and how much you could receive this September.

What is the Canada Child Benefit (CCB)?

Launched in July 2016 as a replacement for the Universal Child Care Benefit, the CCB provides tax-free monthly payments to parents and caregivers to help cover the expenses of raising children under 18.

To qualify, you need to meet certain eligibility criteria. You or your partner must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes and be either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, temporary resident, or someone registered under the Indian Act. You also need to live with the child and be their primary caregiver.

How to get the Canada Child Benefit

Good news for new parents and caregivers — applying for the CCB is straightforward!

Per official advice, you should apply as soon as:

  • Your child is born
  • A child begins living with you (or returns to live with you)
  • You gain custody of a child
  • Your custody arrangements change

The great part is, once you apply, the government will automatically check if you’re eligible for provincial or territorial benefits too. There are different ways to apply: when registering the birth of your child, by mail, or online through My Account.

If you’re registering your newborn's birth, be sure to provide your social insurance number and consent for your information to be shared with the CRA, so you can be considered for the CCB automatically. If you don’t consent, you’ll need to apply via mail or My Account instead.

To apply online, log into My Account and follow the steps under "Apply for child benefits." If you’re applying by mail, fill out and send Form RC66 to your nearest tax office. Some applicants may need to provide extra documents depending on their situation.

How much can you get from the CCB?

The amount you can receive through the CCB depends on a few factors: the number of children you have, their ages, your marital status and your adjusted family net income (AFNI) from the previous year.

As of September 2024, families with an AFNI under $36,502 can receive the maximum amount — $7,787 per year ($648.91 per month) for kids under 6, and $6,570 per year ($547.50 per month) for children aged 6 to 17.

If your income is above $36,502, your payments will start to decrease. The CRA recalculates payments every July, so if your AFNI changed in 2023, your CCB amount may be different this year.

Remember, to keep receiving payments, you and your spouse or partner must file your tax returns on time every year, even if your income is tax-exempt.
